Julie & Julia (2009)

The movie was very nicely done. Meryl Streep did an amazing job as Julie Childs. You’ll enjoy the way the crew shoot from lower angles or use creatively hidden step stools allow her tower over the other actors. The story of Julie Childs could have been done more, they kind of glossed over her television career and only briefly touch on about 8-10 years of her life after 1949 onward.

As to the story of Julie I found it stereo typical, contrived and almost telegraphed. I heard that the real Julie was in the end a horrible person who drove her boyfriend away (rather than the movie version where everything works out fine). That could be false, or real the fun part is I don’t care because I never had an emotional attachment to her. The best my wife and I got out of her character was that the actress that played her looked like a boy through all of it. A moody, bratty, bitch like boy.

The cool part was that she was originally born in Austin and still has a blog on of all things blogspot…. Amazingly she still gets lots of comments which based on the movie is how she gauged her success.

http://juliepowell.blogspot.com/

Overall, the movie was very fun and light at heart. It could have had more cooking, more Julia and more Meryl. 4 Stars!

Yes, it’s true! I’ve had over 15 years of accident free living and this car, my favorite car of all time has never been in an accident until Tuesday when I was hit from behind while stopped in traffic on the way to work.

I was the lead car in a three way fender bender in which APD responded to. Citations for failure to provide valid insurance, and failure to provide valid ID were given to driver #3 who impacted the middle vehicle which in turn hit mine.

Damage seems to be isolated to my rear bumper, which looks like it has been pushed down about 1 inch and in about 2 inches. The left rear tail light has been popped from its housing and both are pushed up about 1/2 an inch. The great part is you can see the front plate and bumper of car #2 in my bumper… :\

Here is some video:

He’s due back finally and we are all extremely excited. We’ve got so many things planned for him over the next month and the following weeks after school starts.

He’ll finally be here on weekends, which makes me super happy. I can finally do things with him! Things a real Dad gets to do with a son. I’m sure he’s starving for that type of attention and I’m eager to show him it.

First up! a trip to the San Antonio Zoo. It’s going to be great, a new zoo and a new experience. After that we’ll go check out the Riverwalk and the outside of the Alamo. After that there will be trips out to the Lake Travis and boat rides, building things in the garage, learning to ride a bike, making new friends and just getting the chance to be a real kid with a real family finally.

It’s gonna be great!

Plot Summary for
Planet 51 (2009)

Lem is just an average teenager working on getting the girl and furthering his career at the local planetarium – except that he’s an alien. At least to U.S. astronaut Captain Charles T. Baker who lands on Lem’s planet hoping for a quick flag plant and a hasty return to earth and his millions of screaming fans. But on this alien planet the media has tagged spacemen as brain-eating, zombie-creating monsters, causing Baker to run for his life and into Lem’s house. Now it’s up to the green native to get the clumsy astronaut back to his spaceship before military dictator General Grawl and mad scientist Professor Kipple manage to exterminate the Earthly visitor.

4 Stars out of 5!

I loved this movie, it was really funny. The “alter” world that was the aliens home planet was very cool. My favorite character was the dog. It was an “Alien” puppy, with the tongue mouth, and the acid “pee”. It was a classic use of the cameo.

The characters were funny as well from the comic store working best friend to the cute next door neighbors daughter who the lead character was afraid to talk to.

The astronaunt was well written too. Mostly into the space program for the chics at first, he later comes into his own and becomes the guy with the “Right Stuff”.

I would recommend this for kids from 7 and up because of the theme and the inter-movie jokes.

Enjoy!

=========================================

4 out of 5 stars!

This was ONE funny movie and if you liked Office Space you’ll probably really like this movie as well. It had all the elements of a great comedy. Drugs, Sex, Crime and Ben Affleck. The best part of the movie is that it is Written and Directed by Mike Judge one of the creators of Beavis and Butthead. He even makes a cameo appearance as “Jim”.

There are also a lot of other really great appearances by some awesome actors. Gene Simmons makes a very great ambulance chasing laywer and Hal Sparks plays a small role of a guitar store salesmen who gets ripped off. However, the stars of the show are Jason Bateman, Mila Kunis, Kristen Wiig (SNL) and Ben Affleck. Don’t be a “Dingus” and see this movie!!
